Context of Matthew 10:14
12When you go into the house, say to the people there, “We pray that you will be well.” 13If the people of that house accept you, then everyone in the house will be well. But if they do not accept you, then take back your kind words. Sometimes you will go to some house or town and the people will not accept you there. They will not listen to your message. Then you should leave. Clean the dirt of that place off your feet. 15I tell you this: One day God will punish people like that. God will punish them even more than the people who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah long ago.’ 16Jesus then said to his disciples, ‘Listen well. I am sending you to people who will want to kill you. You will be like sheep among wild animals. You must watch carefully, like snakes do. But you must also be good and kind like doves.

Commentaries on Matthew 10:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Shake off the dust of your feet - The Jews considered themselves defiled by the dust of a heathen country, when was represented by the prophets as a polluted laud, Amos 7:17, when compared with the land of Israel, which was considered as a holy land, Ezekiel 45:1; therefore, to shake the dust of any city of Israel from off one's clothes or feet was an emblematical action, signifying a renunciation of all farther connection with them, and placing them on a…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 See also Mark 6:8-11, and Luke 9:3-5. In both these places the substance of this account is given, though not so particularly as in Matthew. The general subject is the instructions given to the apostles. Matthew 10:9 Provide neither gold nor silver, nor brass - This prohibition of gold, silver, and brass is designed to prevent their providing money for their journey. Pieces of money of “small value” were made of brass. In your purses…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-15Verses 5-15 The Gentiles must not have the gospel brought them, till the Jews have refused it. This restraint on the apostles was only in their first mission. Wherever they went they must proclaim, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. They preached, to establish the faith; the kingdom, to animate the hope; of heaven, to inspire the love of heavenly things, and the contempt of earthly; which is at hand, that men may prepare for it without delay. Christ gave…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Shake the dust off your feet: This act was like the actions of a prophet. For the disciples, the gesture meant rejecting those who opposed God’s work (see Acts 18:6). Speaking judgment on those who refuse the message was part of proclaiming the good news about God’s kingdom (see Matthew 11:20–24; 13:10–15…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city--for possibly a whole town might not furnish one "worthy." shake off the dust of your feet--"for a testimony against them," as Mark and Luke add (Mr 6:11; Lu 10:11). By this symbolical action they vividly shook themselves from all connection with such, and all responsibility for the guilt of rejecting them and their message. Such symbolical actions were…Read the comment
