Context of Luke 9:50
48Jesus said, ‘If someone accepts this child because of me, then he also accepts me. And anyone who accepts me also accepts my Father God, who sent me. The person who makes himself the least important among you is really the greatest.’ 49John then said, ‘Teacher, we saw a man who was speaking to people that had bad spirits in them. He was saying, “Jesus says that you must come out.” We told the man that he must not do this. We said that because he is not in our group.’ ‘Do not try to stop him,’ Jesus said, ‘If someone is not against you, he is working to help you.’ 51The time came when God would soon take Jesus up to heaven. Jesus knew this, so he began to go towards Jerusalem. 52He arrived near a village in the country of Samaria. He sent some people into the village with a message. They went to ask for a place to stay for the night.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-50Verses 43-50 This prediction of Christ's sufferings was plain enough, but the disciples would not understand it, because it agreed not with their notions. A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him! If ever any society of Christians…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50for whoever is not against you is for you: Although the man who was casting out demons was not one of the twelve disciples, Jesus said he should not be stopped because he was also proclaiming the message of the kingdom. This statement was a proverb (a wise saying), not an absolute rule, since Jesus made the opposite statement in 11:23. Wisdom is needed to apply a proverb correctly in each situation.Read the comment

"Ye were wrong." "But we did because he followeth not us,'" "No matter. For (1) There is no man which shall do a miracle in My name that can…Read the comment
