Context of Luke 9:50
48and said to them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receives me, and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me. For he who is the least among you all, he is great. 49And John answering said, Master, we saw some one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbad him, because he follows not with us. And Jesus said to him, Forbid [him] not, for he that is not against you is for you. 51And it came to pass when the days of his receiving up were fulfilled, that he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers before his face. And having gone they entered into a village of the Samaritans that they might make ready for him.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-50Verses 43-50 This prediction of Christ's sufferings was plain enough, but the disciples would not understand it, because it agreed not with their notions. A little child is the emblem by which Christ teaches us simplicity and humility. What greater honour can any man attain to in this world, than to be received by men as a messenger of God and Christ; and to have God and Christ own themselves received and welcomed in him! If ever any society of Christians…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50for whoever is not against you is for you: Although the man who was casting out demons was not one of the twelve disciples, Jesus said he should not be stopped because he was also proclaiming the message of the kingdom. This statement was a proverb (a wise saying), not an absolute rule, since Jesus made the opposite statement in 11:23. Wisdom is needed to apply a proverb correctly in each situation.Read the comment

"Ye were wrong." "But we did because he followeth not us,'" "No matter. For (1) There is no man which shall do a miracle in My name that can…Read the comment
