Context of John 1:14
12Some people did accept him and they believed in him. He gave authority to those people to become God's children. 13They did not become God's children in the usual human way. They were not born because some people wanted to have children. They were not born because of what any man decided. No! They were born from God. The Word became a man. He lived among us. We saw his great glory. He has the glory of the Father's one true Son. He is full of God's grace and truth. 15John told people about the Word. He shouted, ‘This is the man that I told you about. He comes after me. But he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.’ 16The Word is full of everything that we need. We have all received one good thing after another good thing.

Commentaries on John 1:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And the Word was made flesh - That very person who was in the beginning - who was with God - and who was God, John 1:1, in the fullness of time became flesh - became incarnated by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin. Allowing this apostle to have written by Divine inspiration, is not this verse, taken in connection with John 1:1, an absolute and incontestable proof of the proper and eternal Godhead of Christ Jesus? And dwelt among us…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14And the Word was made flesh - The word “flesh,” here, is evidently used to denote “human nature” or “man.” See Matthew 16:17; Matthew 19:5; Matthew 24:22; Luke 3:6; Romans 1:3; Romans 9:5. The “Word” was made “man.” This is commonly expressed by saying that he became “incarnate.” When we say that a being becomes “incarnate,” we mean that one of a higher order than man, and of a different nature, assumes the appearance of man or becomes a man. Here it is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-14Verses 6-14 John the Baptist came to bear witness concerning Jesus. Nothing more fully shows the darkness of men's minds, than that when the Light had appeared, there needed a witness to call attention to it. Christ was the true Light; that great Light which deserves to be called so. By his Spirit and grace he enlightens all that are enlightened to salvation; and those that are not enlightened by him, perish in darkness. Christ was in the world when he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14The Word became flesh: This means the Word became truly human. The idea that the Word became human was shocking to both Greeks and Jews. Many Greeks believed that God was completely separate from the ordinary human world. They used the word sarx (Greek for “flesh”) to describe human life as weak or earthly. John taught something very different. He said that God himself became human in Jesus Christ (compare 1:1). Jesus was fully human and fully divine. He…Read the comment

And the Word, &c.--To raise the reader to the altitude of this climax were the thirteen foregoing verses written. was made flesh--BECAME MAN, in man's present frail, mortal condition, denoted by the word "flesh" (Is 40:6; 1Pe 1:24). It is directed probably against the Docetæ, who held that Christ was not really but only apparently man; against whom this gentle spirit is vehement in his Epistles (1Jo 4:3; 2Jo 7, 10, 11), [Lucke, &c.].
