Context of 1 Corinthians 15:10
8and last of all, as to one untimely (prematurely, traumatically) born, He appeared to me also. 9For I am the least [worthy] of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I [at one time] fiercely oppressed and violently persecuted the church of God. But by the [remarkable] grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not without effect. In fact, I worked harder than all of the apostles, though it was not I, but the grace of God [His unmerited favor and blessing which was] with me. 11So whether it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed and trusted in and relied on with confidence. 12Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how is it that some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 15:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10But, by the grace of God I am what I am - God, by his mere grace and good will, has called me to be an apostle, and has denominated me such. And his grace, etc. - Nor have I been unfaithful to the Divine call; I used the grace which he gave me; and when my labors, travels, and sufferings are considered, it will be evident that I have labored more abundantly than the whole twelve. This was most literally true. Yet not I, but the grace of God - It was not…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am - By the “favor” or mercy of God. What I have is to be traced to him, and not to any native tendency to goodness, or any native inclination to his service, or to any merit of my own. All my hopes of heaven; all my zeal; all my success; all my piety; all my apostolic endowments, are to be traced to him. Nothing is more common in the writings of Paul, than a disposition to trace all that he had to the mere mercy and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10But by the grace of God: Paul understood God's special favor, or grace, towards him, which led to an extraordinary response. This response was also God working through Paul by his grace (see 2 Corinthians 4:7; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:27).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. by ... grace ... and his grace--The repetition implies the prominence which God's grace had in his mind, as the sole cause of his marvellous conversion and subsequent labors. Though "not meet to be called an apostle," grace has given him, in Christ, the meetness needed for the office. Translate as the Greek, "His grace which was (showed) towards me." what I am--occupying the honorable office of an apostle. Contrast with this the self-sufficient prayer…Read the comment
