Context of Romans 15:24

22For this reason I was often hindered from coming to you. 23But now with no place in these regions, and since I have had a desire for many years to come to you, I hope to see you while traveling through when I go to Spain—and to be helped on my journey there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a bit. 25But now I am going to Jerusalem, bringing aid to the kedoshim. 26For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the believers in Jerusalem.

Commentaries on Romans 15:24

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24Whensoever I take my journey into Spain - Where it is very likely the Gospel had not yet been planted; though legendary tales inform us that St. James had planted the Gospel there long before this time, and had founded many bishoprics! But this is as unfounded as it is ridiculous and absurd; for nothing like what is now termed a bishopric, nor even a parish, was founded for many years after this. An itinerant preacher, might, with more propriety, say…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24Whensoever I take my journey into Spain - Ancient Spain comprehended the modern kingdoms of Spain and Portugal, or the whole of the Spanish peninsula. It was then subject to the Romans. It is remarkable, even here, that the apostle does not say that his principal object was to visit the church at Rome, much as he desired that, but only to “take it in his way” in the fulfillment of his higher purpose to preach the gospel in regions where Christ was not…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-29Verses 22-29 The apostle sought the things of Christ more than his own will, and would not leave his work of planting churches to go to Rome. It concerns all to do that first which is most needful. We must not take it ill if our friends prefer work which is pleasing to God, before visits and compliments, which may please us. It is justly expected from all Christians, that they should promote every good work, especially that blessed work, the conversion of…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24I hope to see you on my way to Spain: In Paul’s time, "Spain" referred to the whole Iberian Peninsula, which includes modern Spain and Portugal. The Romans had controlled parts of this region since 200 BC. However, it became an organized Roman province only during Paul’s lifetime. Paul viewed Spain, at the western edge of the Mediterranean world, as the final stage of his mission. Through this mission, he believed he was fulfilling Isaiah 66:19–20. you…Read the comment
