Context of Romans 15:22
20In this way I make it my aim to proclaim the Good News not where Messiah was already named, lest I build on another person’s foundation, 21but as it is written, “Those who have never been told shall see, and those who have not heard shall understand.” For this reason I was often hindered from coming to you. 23But now with no place in these regions, and since I have had a desire for many years to come to you, 24I hope to see you while traveling through when I go to Spain—and to be helped on my journey there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a bit.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22For which cause, etc. - My considering it a point of honor to build on no other man's foundation; and, finding that the Gospel has been long ago planted at Rome, I have been prevented from going thither, purposing rather to spend my time and strength in preaching where Christ has not, as yet, been proclaimed.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22For which cause - I have been so entirely occupied in this leading purpose of my life, that I have not been able to come to you. Much hindered - Many ways; not many times. I had so frequent and urgent demands on my time elsewhere, that I could not come to you. From coming to you - Where the gospel “has been” preached. I have desired to come, but have been unable to leave the vast region where I might preach the gospel to those who had never heard it.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-29Verses 22-29 The apostle sought the things of Christ more than his own will, and would not leave his work of planting churches to go to Rome. It concerns all to do that first which is most needful. We must not take it ill if our friends prefer work which is pleasing to God, before visits and compliments, which may please us. It is justly expected from all Christians, that they should promote every good work, especially that blessed work, the conversion of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-33This final section includes elements often found at the end of New Testament letters: a discussion of travel plans (15:14–29), requests for prayer (15:30–33), references to ministry partners (16:1–2, 21–23), greetings (16:3–16), and a short hymn of praise (16:25–27). Only the warning about false teachers is a non-standard feature in this conclusion (16:17–19).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 18-2218-22. For I will not dare to speak of any--"to speak aught" of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me--a modest, though somewhat obscure form of expression, meaning, "I will not dare to go beyond what Christ hath wrought by me"--in which form accordingly the rest of the passage is expressed. Observe here how Paul ascribes all the success of his labors to the activity of the living Redeemer, working in and by him. by word and deed--by preaching…Read the comment
