Context of Revelation 16:17
15“Behold, I am coming like a thief! How fortunate is the one who stays alert and keeps his clothes on, lest he walk around naked and they see his shamefulness.” 16Then the spirits gathered the kings to the place called in Hebrew Har-Megiddo. The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came out of the Temple from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18And there were flashes of lightning and rumblings and clashes of thunder and a great earthquake—such as never happened since mankind has been on the earth, so mighty was the quake. 19Then the great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. Babylon the great was remembered before God, to force her to drink the cup of the wine of His furious wrath.

But possibly air in this place may have some emblematical meaning. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air - This introduces the final catastrophe in regard to the “beast” - his complete and utter overthrow, accompanied with tremendous judgments. Why the vial was poured into the air is not stated. The most probable supposition as to the idea intended to be represented is, that, as storms and tempests seem to be engendered in the air, so this destruction would come from some supernatural cause, as if the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-21Verses 17-21 The seventh and last angel poured forth his vial, and the downfal of Babylon was finished. The church triumphant in heaven saw it and rejoiced; the church in conflict on earth saw it and became triumphant. God remembered the great and wicked city; though for some time he seemed to have forgotten her idolatry and cruelty. All that was most secure was carried away by the ruin. Men blasphemed: the greatest judgments that can befal men, will not…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17When the seventh bowl is poured out, something unexpected happens. God's enemies gather for battle. But at the crucial moment, instead of a battle, there is a shout: It is done! Jesus spoke these same words from the cross when he completed his work (John 19:30). No one can ultimately fight against God. This scene shows the end of rebellion against God. What follows are different descriptions of the end.Read the comment
