Context of Revelation 16:17
15The Lord says: ‘Listen! I will come secretly, like someone who robs people. If you continue to watch carefully, you will be happy. Keep your clothes with you all the time. Then, when I come, you will not be ashamed because you have no clothes.’ 16Then the bad spirits brought the rulers together to fight in the big war. They came to the place that is called Armageddon in the Hebrew language. Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A voice spoke loudly from the throne in God's house. The voice said, ‘Now it has happened!’ 18There was a great storm, with bright lightning and loud noises of thunder. The ground shook with a strong earthquake. The earthquake was stronger than anything that had happened since people first lived on the earth. 19As a result, the great city of Babylon broke into three parts. When the ground shook, it also destroyed the big cities of other nations in the world. God did not forget the evil things that the people of the great city of Babylon had done. So they had to drink wine from the cup of God's great anger.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air - This introduces the final catastrophe in regard to the “beast” - his complete and utter overthrow, accompanied with tremendous judgments. Why the vial was poured into the air is not stated. The most probable supposition as to the idea intended to be represented is, that, as storms and tempests seem to be engendered in the air, so this destruction would come from some supernatural cause, as if the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-21Verses 17-21 The seventh and last angel poured forth his vial, and the downfal of Babylon was finished. The church triumphant in heaven saw it and rejoiced; the church in conflict on earth saw it and became triumphant. God remembered the great and wicked city; though for some time he seemed to have forgotten her idolatry and cruelty. All that was most secure was carried away by the ruin. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17When the seventh bowl is poured out, something unexpected happens. God's enemies gather for battle. But at the crucial moment, instead of a battle, there is a shout: It is done! Jesus spoke these same words from the cross when he completed his work (John 19:30). No one can ultimately fight against God. This scene shows the end of rebellion against God. What follows are different descriptions of the end.Read the comment
