Context of Luke 21:32

30As soon as they sprout their leaves, you see it and you know at once that summer is near. 31So also, when you see these all these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Amen, I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. 34“But watch out so your hearts are not weighed down by carousing, strong drink, and the worries of life. Do not let that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-38Verses 29-38 Christ tells his disciples to observe the signs of the times, which they might judge by. He charges them to look upon the ruin of the Jewish nation as near. Yet this race and family of Abraham shall not be rooted out; it shall survive as a nation, and be found as prophesied, when the Son of man shall be revealed. He cautions them against being secure and sensual. This command is given to all Christ's disciples, Take heed to yourselves, that…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32this generation will not pass away: This saying is difficult to understand. Jesus seems to have predicted that he would come again before the first generation of his disciples died out. There are three main interpretations: the reference is to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 when Jesus "came" in judgment against Israel; this generation refers to a future generation alive when these signs start to happen; the term generation could mean “people,”…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3232. This generation--not "this nation," as some interpret it, which, though admissible in itself, seems very unnatural here. It is rather as in Lu 9:27.Read the comment
