Context of Luke 20:12

10And at the season, he sent a servant to the tenants so that they would give him part of the vineyard’s fruit. But the tenants beat him up and sent him away empty-handed. 11So he proceeded to send another servant. They beat him too and treated him shamefully, and they sent him away empty-handed. And he proceeded to send a third one. They wounded this one too, and they threw him out. 13“Now the master of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love. Probably they will show him respect.’ 14But when the tenants saw him, they discussed the matter among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir! Let’s kill him so the inheritance will be ours.’

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-19Verses 9-19 Christ spake this parable against those who resolved not to own his authority, though the evidence of it was so full. How many resemble the Jews who murdered the prophets and crucified Christ, in their enmity to God, and aversion to his service, desiring to live according to their lusts, without control! Let all who are favoured with God's word, look to it that they make proper use of their advantages. Awful will be the doom, both of those who…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-19This story adapts Isaiah’s Song of the Vineyard (Isaiah 5:1–7) to describe the rejection of Jesus by Israel’s leaders. In Isaiah’s story, the vineyard owner represents God, and the vineyard represents Israel, which failed to produce good fruit and would be judged. Jesus added new characters to the story. The tenant farmers represent Israel’s unrighteous leaders, the servants represent the Old Testament prophets who were repeatedly rejected, and the son…Read the comment
