Context of John 5:9
7The invalid answered Him, “Sir, I have nobody to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I’m trying to get in, somebody else steps down before me!” 8Yeshua tells him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!” Immediately, the man was healed! He took up his mat and started walking around. Now that day was Shabbat, 10so Judean leaders were saying to the man who was healed, “It’s Shabbat! It’s not permitted for you to carry your mat.” 11But he answered them, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9The same day was the sabbath - Mr. Toynard supposes that this miracle was wrought on the 11th of Nisan, the sabbath before the passover, which was celebrated the 14th of Nisan, or 28th of March. But why did our Lord command this man to carry his bed on the sabbath, as the law prohibited all servile work, and especially the carrying of burthens? See Exodus 20:8; Jeremiah 17:21; Nehemiah 13:15. To this it may be answered, The man was a poor man, and if he…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The Sabbath - To carry burdens on the Sabbath was forbidden in the Old Testament, Jeremiah 17:21; Nehemiah 13:15; Exodus 20:8-10. If it be asked, then, why Jesus commanded a man to do on the Sabbath what was understood to be a violation of the day, it may be answered, 1.That the Son of man was Lord of the Sabbath, and had a right to declare what might be done, and even to dispense with a positive law of the Jews, Matthew 12:8; John 5:17. 2.This was a poor…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9Jesus healed the sick man immediately and only asked him to obey. To prove that the man was healed, Jesus told him to pick up his mat and walk. Jesus performed this miracle on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a weekly day of rest. The law of Moses said that no work should be done on that day (based on Genesis 2:2; Exodus 20:8). Jewish tradition identified 39 types of work that were not allowed (Mishnah Shabbat 7:2). One rule said that a person could not carry…Read the comment
