Context of James 5:8

6You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous person—he does not resist you. 7So be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient for it until it receives the early and late rain. You also be patient. Strengthen your hearts because the coming of the Lord is near. 9Do not grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge is standing at the doors. 10As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-11Verses 7-11 Consider him that waits for a crop of corn; and will not you wait for a crown of glory? If you should be called to wait longer than the husbandman, is not there something more worth waiting for? In every sense the coming of the Lord drew nigh, and all his people's losses, hardships, and sufferings, would be repaid. Men count time long, because they measure it by their own lives; but all time is as nothing to God; it is as a moment. To…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8Be patient: This is the ultimate solution for the poor enduring economic struggles and unfair treatment by the wicked people who are rich (5:1–6; see 2:6–7).
