Context of James 5:8

6You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you. 7Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! 10My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-11Verses 7-11 Consider him that waits for a crop of corn; and will not you wait for a crown of glory? If you should be called to wait longer than the husbandman, is not there something more worth waiting for? In every sense the coming of the Lord drew nigh, and all his people's losses, hardships, and sufferings, would be repaid. Men count time long, because they measure it by their own lives; but all time is as nothing to God; it is as a moment. To…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8Be patient: This is the ultimate solution for the poor enduring economic struggles and unfair treatment by the wicked people who are rich (5:1–6; see 2:6–7). People may treat the poor as insignificant and oppress them. Yet, they should not give up or retaliate against their oppressors.
