Context of Mark 13:11
9But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. 10And the gospel must first be proclaimed among all nations. But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, be not anxious beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. 13And ye shall be hated by all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Neither - premeditate - This is wanting in BDL, five others, Coptic, Ethiopic, Vulgate, Itala. Griesbach leaves it doubtful. On this verse see Matthew 10:19; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Neither do ye premeditate - Do not think beforehand, or “prepare” an answer. You know not what the accusations will be, and God will furnish you with a reply that shall be adapted to the occasion. Not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit - This is a full promise that they should be inspired, and consequently their defenses recorded in the Acts of the Apostles are the words of the Holy Spirit. There could be no more explicit promise that they should be under…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11A word of encouragement follows the warning of 13:9. The followers of Jesus need not fear what they should say in these circumstances. The early followers of Jesus were generally uneducated and without political influence (see Acts 4:10–17; 1 Corinthians 1:26). So, this assurance would have comforted them. Believers are not prohibited from thinking about what they will say, but they need not worry about it.Read the comment
