Judges 6
Revised Version 1895
1And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 didH6213 that whichH5869 was evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068: and the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414 them intoH3027 the handH3027 of MidianH4080 sevenH7651 yearsH8141. 2And the handH3027 of MidianH4080 prevailedH5810 againstH5921 IsraelH3478: and becauseH5921 of MidianH4080 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 madeH6213 them the densH4492 whichH834 are in the mountainsH2022, and the cavesH4631, and the strongH5810 holds. 3And soH1961 it was, when IsraelH3478 had sownH2232, that the MidianitesH4080 cameH1961 upH5927, and the AmalekitesH6002, and the childrenH1121 of the eastH6924; they cameH1961 upH5927 againstH5921 them; 4and they encampedH2583 againstH5921 them, and destroyedH7843 the increaseH2981 of the earthH776, tillH5704 thou comeH935 unto GazaH5804, and leftH7604 noH3808 sustenanceH4241 in IsraelH3478, neitherH3808 sheepH7716, norH3808 oxH7794, norH3808 ass. 5For they cameH935 upH5927 with their cattleH4735 and their tentsH168, they cameH935 in as locustsH697 for multitudeH7230; both they and their camelsH1581 were withoutH369 numberH4557: and they cameH935 intoH935 the landH776 to destroyH7843 it. 6And IsraelH3478 was broughtH1809 veryH3966 lowH1809 becauseH6440 of MidianH4080; and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 criedH2199 unto the LORDH3068. 7And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 criedH2199 unto the LORDH3068 becauseH3588 of MidianH4080, 8that the LORDH3068 sentH7971 a prophetH5030 unto the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478: and he saidH559 unto them, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, I broughtH3318 youH7971 upH5927 from EgyptH4714, and broughtH3318 youH7971 forthH3318 outH3318 of the houseH1004 of bondageH5650; 9and I deliveredH5337 youH5414 outH1644 of the handH3027 of the EgyptiansH4713, and outH1644 of the handH3027 of allH3605 that oppressedH3905 youH5414, and drave them outH1644 from beforeH6440 youH5414, and gaveH5414 youH5414 their landH776; 10and I saidH559 unto youH859, I am the LORDH3068 your GodH430; ye shall notH3808 fearH3372 the godsH430 of the AmoritesH567, in whoseH834 landH776 ye dwellH3427: but ye have notH3808 hearkened unto my voiceH6963. 11And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 cameH935 and satH3427 underH8478 the oakH424 whichH834 was in OphrahH6084, that pertained unto JoashH3101 the AbiezriteH33: and his sonH1121 GideonH1439 was beatingH2251 outH6440 wheatH2406 in the winepress, to hide it from the MidianitesH4080. 12And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 appearedH7200 unto him, and saidH559 unto him, The LORDH3068 is with thee, thou mightyH1368 manH1368 of valour. 13And GideonH1439 saidH559 unto him, Oh my lordH3068, ifH834 the LORDH3068 be with usH5414, whyH4100 then is allH3605 this befallenH4672 usH5414? and whereH834 be allH3605 his wondrousH6381 worksH6381 whichH834 our fathersH1 toldH559 usH5414 of, sayingH559, DidH4100 notH3808 the LORDH3068 bringH5927 usH5414 upH5927 from EgyptH4714? but nowH6258 the LORDH3068 hath castH5414 usH5414 offH5414, and deliveredH5414 usH5414 intoH413 the handH3709 of MidianH4080. 14And the LORDH3068 lookedH6437 uponH413 him, and saidH559, GoH7971 in this thy might, and saveH3467 IsraelH3478 from the handH3709 of MidianH4080: have notH3808 I sentH7971 thee? 15And he saidH559 unto him, Oh LordH136, wherewith shall I saveH3467 IsraelH3478? beholdH2009, my familyH1004 is the poorest in ManassehH4519, and I am the leastH6810 in my father’sH1 houseH1004. 16And the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto him, SurelyH3588 I will be with thee, and thou shalt smiteH5221 the MidianitesH4080 as one manH376. 17And he saidH559 unto him, IfH518 nowH4994 I have foundH4672 graceH2580 in thy sightH5869, then shew meH413 a signH226 that it is thou that talkest with meH413. 18DepartH4185 notH408 hence, I prayH4994 thee, untilH5704 I comeH935 unto thee, and bringH935 forthH3318 my presentH4503, and layH3318 it beforeH6440 thee. And he saidH559, I will tarry untilH5704 thou comeH935 againH7725. 19And GideonH1439 wentH3318 in, and madeH6213 ready a kid, and unleavenedH4682 cakesH4682 of an ephahH374 of mealH7058: the fleshH1320 he putH7760 in a basketH5536, and he putH7760 the brothH4839 in a potH6517, and broughtH935 it outH3318 unto him underH8478 the oakH424, and presentedH935 it. 20And the angelH4397 of GodH430 saidH559 unto him, TakeH3947 the fleshH1320 and the unleavenedH4682 cakesH4682, and lay them uponH413 this rockH5553, and pourH8210 outH8210 the brothH4839. And he didH6213 soH3651. 21Then the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 putH7971 forthH7971 the endH7097 of the staffH4938 that was in his handH3027, and touchedH5060 the fleshH1320 and the unleavenedH4682 cakesH4682; and there wentH1980 upH5927 fireH784 outH4480 of the rockH6697, and consumedH398 the fleshH1320 and the unleavenedH4682 cakesH4682; and the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 departedH1980 outH4480 of his sightH5869. 22And GideonH1439 sawH7200 that he was the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068; and GideonH1439 saidH559, AlasH162, O LordH3068 GODH3068! forasmuch as I have seenH7200 the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 faceH6440 to faceH6440. 23And the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto him, PeaceH7965 be unto thee; fearH3372 notH3808: thou shalt notH3808 dieH4191. 24Then GideonH1439 builtH1129 an altarH4196 there unto the LORDH3068, and calledH7121 it Jehovah-shalom: unto this dayH3117 it is yet in OphrahH6084 of the AbiezritesH33. 25And it cameH1961 to passH1961 the sameH1931 nightH3915, that the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto him, TakeH3947 thy father’sH1 bullock, evenH853 the secondH8145 bullock of sevenH7651 yearsH8141 oldH8141, and throw downH3772 the altarH4196 of BaalH1168 that thy fatherH1 hath, and cutH3772 downH3772 the AsherahH842 that is by it: 26and buildH1129 an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068 thy GodH430 uponH5921 the topH7218 of this strongH4581 hold, in the orderlyH4634 mannerH4634, and takeH3947 the secondH8145 bullock, and offerH5927 a burntH5930 offering with the woodH6086 of the AsherahH842 whichH834 thou shalt cutH3772 downH3772. 27Then GideonH1439 tookH3947 tenH6235 menH376 of his servantsH5650, and didH6213 as the LORDH3068 had spokenH1696 unto him: and it cameH1961 to passH1961, becauseH834 he fearedH3372 his father’sH1 householdH1004 and the menH376 of the cityH5892, soH6213 that he couldH376 notH1961 doH6213 it by dayH3119, that he didH6213 it by nightH3915. 28And when the menH376 of the cityH5892 aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, beholdH2009, the altarH4196 of BaalH1168 was brokenH5422 downH5422, and the AsherahH842 was cutH3772 downH5422 that was by it, and the secondH8145 bullock was offeredH5927 uponH5921 the altarH4196 that was builtH1129. 29And they saidH559 one to anotherH7453, Who hath doneH6213 this thingH1697? And when they inquiredH1875 and askedH559, they saidH559, GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of JoashH3101 hath doneH6213 this thingH1697. 30Then the menH376 of the cityH5892 saidH559 unto JoashH3101, BringH3318 outH3318 thy sonH1121, that he may dieH4191: becauseH3588 he hath brokenH5422 downH5422 the altarH4196 of BaalH1168, and becauseH3588 he hath cutH3772 downH5422 the AsherahH842 that was by it. 31And JoashH3101 saidH559 unto allH3605 that stoodH5975 againstH5921 him, Will ye pleadH7378 for BaalH1168? or will ye saveH3467 him? he that will pleadH7378 for him, let him be putH4191 to deathH4191 whilst it is yet morningH1242: ifH518 he be a godH430, let him pleadH7378 for himselfH1931, becauseH3588 one hath brokenH5422 downH5422 his altarH4196. 32Therefore on that dayH3117 he calledH7121 him JerubbaalH3378, sayingH559, Let BaalH1168 pleadH7378 againstH7378 him, becauseH3588 he hath brokenH5422 downH5422 his altarH4196. 33Then allH3605 the MidianitesH4080 and the AmalekitesH6002 and the childrenH1121 of the eastH6924 assembledH622 themselvesH622 togetherH3162; and they passedH5674 over, and pitchedH2583 in the valleyH6010 of JezreelH3157 34But the spiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 cameH3847 uponH3847 GideonH1439; and he blewH8628 a trumpetH7782; and AbiezerH44 was gathered togetherH2199 afterH310 him. 35And he sentH7971 messengersH4397 throughoutH3605 allH3605 ManassehH4519; and they also were gathered togetherH2199 afterH310 him: and he sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto AsherH836, and unto ZebulunH2074, and unto NaphtaliH5321; and they cameH5927 upH5927 to meetH7125 them. 36And GideonH1439 saidH559 unto GodH430, IfH518 thou wilt saveH3467 IsraelH3478 by mine handH3027, as thou hast spokenH1696, 37beholdH2009, I will putH3322 a fleeceH1492 of woolH6785 on the threshing-floor; ifH518 there be dewH2919 on the fleeceH1492 onlyH905, and it be dryH2721 uponH5921 allH3605 the groundH776, then shall I knowH3045 that thou wilt saveH3467 IsraelH3478 by mine handH3027, as thou hast spokenH1696. 38And it was soH3651: for he roseH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 on the morrow, and pressedH2115 the fleeceH1492 together, and wringed the dewH2919 outH4480 of the fleeceH1492, a bowlful of waterH4325. 39And GideonH1439 saidH559 unto GodH430, LetH4994 notH408 thine angerH639 be kindledH2734 againstH5921 meH413, and I will speakH1696 but this onceH6471: letH4994 meH413 prove, I prayH4994 thee, but this onceH6471 with the fleeceH1492; letH4994 it nowH4994 be dryH2721 onlyH389 uponH5921 the fleeceH1492, and uponH5921 allH3605 the groundH776 letH4994 there be dewH2919. 40And GodH430 didH6213 soH3651 that nightH3915: for it was dryH2721 uponH5921 the fleeceH1492 onlyH905, and there was dewH2919 on allH3605 the groundH776.
