Judges 11

Revised Version 1895

1NowH1961 JephthahH3316 the GileaditeH1569 was a mightyH1368 manH1368 of valour, and he was the sonH1121 of an harlotH2181: and GileadH1568 begat JephthahH3316. 2And Gilead’sH1568 wifeH802 bare him sonsH1121; and when his wife’sH802 sonsH1121 grewH1431 upH1431, they drave outH1644 JephthahH3316, and saidH559 unto him, Thou shalt notH3808 inheritH5157 in our father’sH1 houseH1004; for thou art the sonH1121 of anotherH312 womanH802. 3Then JephthahH3316 fledH1272 from his brethrenH251, and dweltH3427 in the landH776 of TobH2897: and there were gatheredH3950 vain fellowsH376 to JephthahH3316, and they wentH3318 outH3318 with him. 4And it cameH1961 to passH1961 afterH1961 a whileH1961, that the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 madeH1961 war againstH5973 IsraelH3478. 5And it was soH3947, that when the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 madeH1961 war againstH5973 IsraelH3478, the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568 wentH1961 to fetch JephthahH3316 outH853 of the landH776 of TobH2897: 6and they saidH559 unto JephthahH3316, ComeH1961 and be our chiefH7101, that we may fightH3898 with the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 7And JephthahH3316 saidH559 unto the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568, DidH834 notH3808 ye hateH8130 meH413, and driveH1644 meH413 outH1644 of my father’sH1 houseH1004? and whyH4069 are ye comeH935 unto meH413 nowH6258 when ye are in distressH6862? 8And the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568 saidH559 unto JephthahH3316, Therefore are weH6258 turnedH7725 againH7725 to thee nowH6258, that thou mayest goH1980 with usH413, and fightH3898 with the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and thou shalt be our headH7218 over allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of GileadH1568. 9And JephthahH3316 saidH559 unto the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568, IfH518 ye bringH7725 meH413 homeH7725 againH7725 to fightH3898 with the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and the LORDH3068 deliverH5414 them beforeH6440 meH413, shall I be your headH7218? 10And the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568 saidH559 unto JephthahH3316, The LORDH3068 shall be witnessH8085 betweenH996 usH413; surelyH518 accordingH413 to thy wordH1697 soH3651 will weH518 doH6213. 11Then JephthahH3316 wentH6440 with the eldersH2205 of GileadH1568, and the peopleH5971 madeH7760 him headH7218 and chiefH7218 over them: and JephthahH3316 spake allH3605 his wordsH1697 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 in MizpahH4709. 12And JephthahH3316 sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, sayingH559, WhatH4100 hast thou to doH4100 with meH413, that thou art comeH935 unto meH413 to fightH3898 againstH413 my landH776? 13And the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 answeredH559 unto the messengersH4397 of JephthahH3316, BecauseH3588 IsraelH3478 tookH3947 awayH7725 my landH776, when he cameH5927 upH5927 outH413 of EgyptH4714, from ArnonH769 evenH5704 unto JabbokH2999, and unto JordanH3383: nowH6258 therefore restoreH7725 thoseH1121 landsH776 againH7725 peaceablyH7965. 14And JephthahH3316 sentH7971 messengersH4397 againH5750 unto the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983: 15and he saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith JephthahH3316: IsraelH3478 tookH3947 notH3808 awayH3947 the landH776 of MoabH4124, norH3808 the landH776 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983: 16but when they cameH935 upH5927 from EgyptH4714, and IsraelH3478 walked throughH935 the wildernessH4057 unto the Red SeaH3220, and cameH935 to KadeshH6946; 17then IsraelH3478 sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto the kingH4428 of EdomH123, sayingH559, LetH7971 meH413, I prayH4994 thee, passH5674 throughH5674 thy landH776: but the kingH4428 of EdomH123 hearkened notH3808. And in like manner he sentH7971 unto the kingH4428 of MoabH4124: but he would notH3808: and IsraelH3478 abodeH3427 in KadeshH6946. 18Then he walked throughH935 the wildernessH4057, and compassed the landH776 of EdomH123, and the landH776 of MoabH4124, and cameH935 by the eastH4217 sideH5676 of the landH776 of MoabH4124, and they pitchedH2583 on the otherH5676 sideH5676 of ArnonH769; but they cameH935 notH3808 withinH935 the borderH1366 of MoabH4124, for ArnonH769 was the borderH1366 of MoabH4124. 19And IsraelH3478 sentH7971 messengersH4397 unto SihonH5511 kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, the kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809; and IsraelH3478 saidH559 unto him, LetH7971 usH4994 passH5674, weH5704 prayH4994 thee, throughH5674 thy landH776 unto my placeH4725. 20But SihonH5511 trustedH539 notH3808 IsraelH3478 to passH5674 throughH5674 his borderH1366: but SihonH5511 gatheredH622 allH3605 his peopleH5971 togetherH622, and pitchedH2583 in JahazH3096, and foughtH3898 againstH5973 IsraelH3478. 21And the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, deliveredH5414 SihonH5511 and allH3605 his peopleH5971 intoH776 the handH3027 of IsraelH3478, and they smoteH5221 them: soH5414 IsraelH3478 possessedH3423 allH3605 the landH776 of the AmoritesH567, the inhabitantsH3427 of that countryH776. 22And they possessedH3423 allH3605 the borderH1366 of the AmoritesH567, from ArnonH769 evenH5704 unto JabbokH2999, and from the wildernessH4057 evenH5704 unto JordanH3383. 23SoH6258 nowH6258 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, hath dispossessedH3423 the AmoritesH567 from beforeH6440 his peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, and shouldest thou possessH3423 them? 24Wilt notH3808 thou possessH3423 that whichH834 ChemoshH3645 thy godH430 giveth thee to possessH3423? SoH3808 whomsoever the LORDH3068 our GodH430 hath dispossessedH3423 from beforeH6440 usH6440, them will weH834 possessH3423. 25And nowH6258 art thou any thing betterH2896 thanH2896 BalakH1111 the sonH1121 of ZipporH6834, kingH4428 of MoabH4124? did he everH7378 striveH7378 againstH5973 IsraelH3478, or did he everH7378 fightH3898 againstH5973 them? 26WhileH1931 IsraelH3478 dweltH3427 in HeshbonH2809 and herH3605 townsH1323, and in AroerH6177 and herH3605 townsH1323, and in allH3605 the citiesH5892 that are alongH5921 by the sideH3027 of ArnonH769, threeH7969 hundredH3967 yearsH8141; wherefore didH834 ye notH3808 recoverH5337 them withinH5921 that time? 27I therefore have notH3808 sinnedH2398 againstH2398 thee, but thou doest meH3808 wrongH7451 to war againstH2398 meH3808: the LORDH3068, the JudgeH8199, be judgeH8199 this dayH3117 betweenH996 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 and the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 28Howbeit the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 AmmonH5983 hearkened notH3808 unto the wordsH1697 of JephthahH3316 whichH834 he sentH7971 him. 29Then the spiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 uponH5921 JephthahH3316, and he passedH5674 over GileadH1568 and ManassehH4519, and passedH5674 over MizpehH4708 of GileadH1568, and from MizpehH4708 of GileadH1568 he passedH5674 over unto the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 30And JephthahH3316 vowedH5087 a vowH5088 unto the LORDH3068, and saidH559, IfH518 thou wilt indeedH518 deliverH5414 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 intoH3027 mine handH3027, 31then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forthH3318 of the doorsH1817 of my houseH1004 to meetH7125 meH7725, when I returnH7725 in peaceH7965 from the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, it shall be the LORD’SH3068, and I will offerH5927 it upH5927 for a burntH5930 offering. 32SoH5414 JephthahH3316 passedH5674 over unto the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 to fightH3898 againstH413 them; and the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414 them intoH413 his handH3027. 33And he smoteH5221 them from AroerH6177 untilH5704 thou comeH935 to MinnithH4511, evenH5704 twentyH6242 citiesH5892, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a veryH3966 greatH1419 slaughterH4347. SoH935 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 were subduedH3665 beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. 34And JephthahH3316 cameH935 to MizpahH4709 unto his houseH1004, and, beholdH2009, his daughterH1323 cameH935 outH3318 to meetH7125 him with timbrelsH8596 and with dancesH4246: and sheH1931 was his onlyH7535 childH1121; besideH413 herH413 he had neitherH369 sonH1121 norH369 daughterH1323. 35And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when he sawH7200 herH413, that he rent his clothesH899, and saidH559, AlasH162, my daughterH1323! thou hast broughtH7725 meH413 veryH3766 lowH3766, and thou art one of them that troubleH5916 meH413: for I have openedH6475 my mouthH6310 unto the LORDH3068, and I cannotH3808 goH7725 backH7725. 36And sheH834 saidH559 unto him, My fatherH1, thou hast openedH6475 thy mouthH6310 unto the LORDH3068; doH6213 unto meH413 accordingH6310 to that whichH834 hath proceededH3318 outH3318 of thy mouthH6310; forasmuch as the LORDH3068 hath takenH3318 vengeanceH5360 for thee of thine enemiesH341, evenH853 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983. 37And sheH2320 saidH559 unto herH413 fatherH1, LetH7503 this thingH1697 be doneH6213 for meH413: letH7503 meH413 aloneH7503 twoH8147 monthsH2320, that I may depart and goH3381 downH3381 uponH5921 the mountainsH2022, and bewailH1058 my virginityH1331, I and my companions. 38And he saidH559, GoH7971. And he sentH7971 herH7971 awayH7971 for twoH8147 monthsH2320: and sheH1931 departed, sheH1931 and herH7971 companionsH7464, and bewailed herH7971 virginityH1331 uponH5921 the mountainsH2022. 39And it cameH1961 to passH1961 at the endH7093 of twoH8147 monthsH2320, that sheH1931 returnedH7725 unto herH413 fatherH1, who didH6213 with herH413 accordingH413 to his vowH5088 whichH834 he had vowedH5087: and sheH1931 had notH3808 knownH3045 manH376. And it was a customH2706 in IsraelH3478, 40that the daughtersH1323 of IsraelH3478 went yearlyH3117 to celebrate the daughterH1323 of JephthahH3316 the GileaditeH1569 fourH702 daysH3117 in a yearH8141.
