Context of Matthew 13:22
20The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. 23The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” 24Here is another story Jesus told: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22He also that received seed among the thorns - In land ploughed, but not properly cleared and seeded. Is he - represents that person who heareth the word, but the cares, rather the anxiety, , the whole system of anxious carking cares. Lexicographers derive the word from , dividing, or distracting the mind. Thus a poet, Tot me impediunt curae quae meum animum diverse trahunt. Mark adds Mark 4:13, “Know ye not this parable? And how, then, shall ye know all parables?” By which it seems that the Saviour regarded this as one of the simplest and plainest of the parables, and gave an explanation of it that they might understand the general…Read the comment

The worries of life can become overwhelming and lead people away from faithful obedience (see 6:19–34). The temptation of wealth, especially its deceptive nature, is a common theme in Matthew (for example, 4:8–10; 6:24; 13:44–45). God values faith, obedience, and helping those in need more than wealth (for example, 19:21; 25:31–46).Read the comment
