Context of John 6:42
40For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.” 41Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 43But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said. 44For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.

Commentaries on John 6:42
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-46Verses 36-46 The discovery of their guilt, danger, and remedy, by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, makes men willing and glad to come, and to give up every thing which hinders applying to him for salvation. The Father's will is, that not one of those who were given to the Son, should be rejected or lost by him. No one will come, till Divine grace has subdued, and in part changed his heart; therefore no one who comes will ever be cast out. The gospel finds…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41-42When Jesus called himself the bread that came down from heaven, the crowd had to make a decision. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph: The people questioned Jesus because they thought they knew him and his family. Their familiarity with him made his claims seem strange and unbelievable. Since they saw him as an ordinary man from their town, they struggled to accept what he said about himself.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 41-4641-46. Jews murmured--muttered, not in our Lord's hearing, but He knew it (Joh 6:43; Joh 2:25). he said, I am the bread, &c.--Missing the sense and glory of this, and having no relish for such sublimities, they harp upon the "Bread from heaven." "What can this mean? Do we not know all about Him--where, when, and of whom He was born? And yet He says He came down from heaven!"Read the comment
