Context of John 6:42
40These are the people who will have life for ever with God: everyone who sees the Son and believes in him. I will raise them all up on the last day. That is what my Father wants.’ 41Jesus had said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ When he said this, the Jewish leaders there did not like it. So they started to say bad things about Jesus. They said, ‘This is Jesus, the son of Joseph. We know his father and his mother. He should not say that he came down from heaven.’ 43Jesus answered, ‘Stop saying these bad things about me to each other. 44The Father has sent me. Nobody can come to me unless the Father brings them to me. I will raise those people up on the last day, so that they have life for ever.

Commentaries on John 6:42
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-46Verses 36-46 The discovery of their guilt, danger, and remedy, by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, makes men willing and glad to come, and to give up every thing which hinders applying to him for salvation. The Father's will is, that not one of those who were given to the Son, should be rejected or lost by him. No one will come, till Divine grace has subdued, and in part changed his heart; therefore no one who comes will ever be cast out. The gospel finds…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41-42When Jesus called himself the bread that came down from heaven, the crowd had to make a decision. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph: The people questioned Jesus because they thought they knew him and his family. Their familiarity with him made his claims seem strange and unbelievable. Since they saw him as an ordinary man from their town, they struggled to accept what he said about himself.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 41-4641-46. Jews murmured--muttered, not in our Lord's hearing, but He knew it (Joh 6:43; Joh 2:25). he said, I am the bread, &c.--Missing the sense and glory of this, and having no relish for such sublimities, they harp upon the "Bread from heaven." "What can this mean? Do we not know all about Him--where, when, and of whom He was born? And yet He says He came down from heaven!"Read the comment
