Context of Luke 9:33
31They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke about his departure that he was about to carry out at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy, but as they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. Then as the men were starting to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah” – not knowing what he was saying. 34As he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35Then a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him!”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-36Verses 28-36 Christ's transfiguration was a specimen of that glory in which he will come to judge the world; and was an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him. Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. Our Lord Jesus, even in his transfiguration, was willing to speak concerning his death and sufferings. In our greatest glories on earth, let us remember that in this world we have no continuing city. What need we…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33Let us put up three shelters: The Greek word translated shelter (skēnē) is the same word used in the Greek Old Testament for the tabernacle. This was Israel's tent for worship that they moved with them as they traveled in the wilderness. It also refers to the temporary shelters that Jews used during the Feast of Booths (Leviticus 23:42; Nehemiah 8:14–17). Peter might have wanted to extend the event by providing a place for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah to stay.Read the comment
