Context of 1 Thessalonians 1:6
4We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5in that our gospel did not come to you merely in words, but in power and in the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction (surely you recall the character we displayed when we came among you to help you). And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, when you received the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction. 7As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For from you the message of the Lord has echoed forth not just in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place reports of your faith in God have spread, so that we do not need to say anything.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Ye became followers of us - Ye became imitators, , of us-ye believed the same truths, walked in the same way, and minded the same thing; knowing that our doctrine was of the Lord, and that the way in which we walked was prescribed by himself, and that he also suffered the contradictions of ungodly men. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6And ye became followers of us - “You became imitators - ̀ mimētai- of us.” This does not mean that they became followers of Paul, Silas, and Timothy, in the sense that they had set themselves up as teachers, or as the head of a sect, but that they imitated their manner of living; see the notes on 1 Corinthians 4:16; 1 Corinthians 11:1.
