Lamentations 5:2-18
2Our inheritance has been turned over to 1strangers, Our 2houses to aliens.3We have become orphans 3without a father, Our mothers are like widows.44We have to pay for our drinking 5water, Our wood comes to us at a price.56Our pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, there is 7no rest for us.6We have 8submitted to 9Egypt and Assyria 10to get enough bread.7Our 11fathers sinned, and are no more; It is we who have borne their iniquities.812Slaves rule over us; There is 13no one to deliver us from their hand.9We get our bread 14at the 15risk of our lives 16Because of the sword in the wilderness.10Our skin has become as 17hot as an oven, Because of 18the burning heat of famine.11They ravished the 19women in Zion, The virgins in the cities of Judah.12Princes were hung by their hands; 2021Elders were not respected.13Young men 2223worked at the grinding mill, And youths 24stumbled under loads of wood.14Elders 25are gone from the gate, Young men from their 26music.15The joy of our hearts has 27ceased; Our dancing has been turned into mourning.16The 28crown has fallen from our head; 29Woe to us, for we have sinned!17Because of this our 30heart is faint, Because of these things our 31eyes are dim;18Because of 32Mount Zion which lies desolate, 33Foxes prowl in it.
