John 6:22-71

22The next day 1the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus 2had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23There came other small boats from 3Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the 4Lord 5had given thanks. 24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and 6came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “7Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you 8seek Me, not because you saw 9signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27Do not 10work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to 11eternal life, which 12the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, 13has set His seal.” 28Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is 14the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He 15has sent.” 30So they said to Him, “16What then do You do for a 17sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 3118Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘19He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33For the bread of God is 20that which 21comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34Then they said to Him, “Lord, always 22give us this bread.”

35Jesus said to them, “23I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me 24will never thirst. 36But 25I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. 3726All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38For 27I have come down from heaven, 28not to do My own will, but 29the will of Him who 30sent Me. 39This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of 31all that He has given Me I 32lose nothing, but 33raise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who 34beholds the Son and 35believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will 36raise him up on the last day.”

4137Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that 38came down out of heaven.” 42They were saying, “39Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother 40we know? How does He now say, ‘41I have come down out of heaven’?” 43Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me 42draws him; and I will 43raise him up on the last day. 45It is written 44in the prophets, ‘45And they shall all be 46taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 4647Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes 48has eternal life. 4849I am the bread of life. 4950Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread which 51comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and 52not die. 5153I am the living bread that 54came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, 55he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give 56for the life of the world is 57My flesh.”

5258Then the Jews 59began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of 60the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will 61raise him up on the last day. 55For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood 62abides in Me, and I in him. 57As the 63living Father 64sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58This is the bread which 65came down out of heaven; not as 66the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread 67will live forever.” 59These things He said 68in the synagogue as He taught 69in Capernaum.

60Therefore many of His 70disciples, when they heard this said, “71This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61But Jesus, 72conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this 73cause you to stumble? 62What then if you see 74the Son of Man 75ascending to where He was before? 6376It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; 77the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64But there are 78some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus 79knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and 80who it was that would 81betray Him. 65And He was saying, “For this reason I have 82said to you, that no one can come to Me unless 83it has been granted him from the Father.”

66As a result of this many of His 84disciples 85withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67So Jesus said to 86the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 6887Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have 88words of eternal life. 69We have believed and have come to know that You are 89the Holy One of God.” 70Jesus answered them, “90Did I Myself not choose you, 91the twelve, and yet one of you is 92a devil?” 71Now He meant Judas 93the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, 94one of 95the twelve, 96was going to betray Him.
