John 6:14-71

14Therefore when the people saw the 1sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the 2Prophet who is to come into the world.”

15So Jesus, perceiving that they were 3intending to come and take Him by force 4to make Him king, 5withdrew again to 6the mountain by Himself alone.

16Now when evening came, His 7disciples went down to the sea, 17and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea 8to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19Then, when they had rowed about 9three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. 20But He said to them, “It is I; 1011do not be afraid.” 21So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22The next day 12the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus 13had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23There came other small boats from 14Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the 15Lord 16had given thanks. 24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and 17came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “18Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you 19seek Me, not because you saw 20signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27Do not 21work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to 22eternal life, which 23the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, 24has set His seal.” 28Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is 25the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He 26has sent.” 30So they said to Him, “27What then do You do for a 28sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 3129Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘30He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33For the bread of God is 31that which 32comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34Then they said to Him, “Lord, always 33give us this bread.”

35Jesus said to them, “34I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me 35will never thirst. 36But 36I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. 3737All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38For 38I have come down from heaven, 39not to do My own will, but 40the will of Him who 41sent Me. 39This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of 42all that He has given Me I 43lose nothing, but 44raise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who 45beholds the Son and 46believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will 47raise him up on the last day.”

4148Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that 49came down out of heaven.” 42They were saying, “50Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother 51we know? How does He now say, ‘52I have come down out of heaven’?” 43Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me 53draws him; and I will 54raise him up on the last day. 45It is written 55in the prophets, ‘56And they shall all be 57taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 4658Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes 59has eternal life. 4860I am the bread of life. 4961Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread which 62comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and 63not die. 5164I am the living bread that 65came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, 66he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give 67for the life of the world is 68My flesh.”

5269Then the Jews 70began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of 71the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will 72raise him up on the last day. 55For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood 73abides in Me, and I in him. 57As the 74living Father 75sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58This is the bread which 76came down out of heaven; not as 77the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread 78will live forever.” 59These things He said 79in the synagogue as He taught 80in Capernaum.

60Therefore many of His 81disciples, when they heard this said, “82This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61But Jesus, 83conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this 84cause you to stumble? 62What then if you see 85the Son of Man 86ascending to where He was before? 6387It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; 88the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64But there are 89some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus 90knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and 91who it was that would 92betray Him. 65And He was saying, “For this reason I have 93said to you, that no one can come to Me unless 94it has been granted him from the Father.”

66As a result of this many of His 95disciples 96withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67So Jesus said to 97the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 6898Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have 99words of eternal life. 69We have believed and have come to know that You are 100the Holy One of God.” 70Jesus answered them, “101Did I Myself not choose you, 102the twelve, and yet one of you is 103a devil?” 71Now He meant Judas 104the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, 105one of 106the twelve, 107was going to betray Him.
