Context of Deuteronomy 25:17
15You shall have a full and just weight; you shall have a full and just measure, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 16For everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the Lord your God. “Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came out from Egypt, 18how he met you along the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear God. 19Therefore it shall come about when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 Honesty in trade, as a duty to our neighbor, is emphatically enforced once more (compare Leviticus 19:35-36). It is noteworthy that John the Baptist puts the like duties in the forefront of his preaching (compare Luke 3:12 ff); and that “the prophets” (compare Ezekiel 45:10-12; Amos 8:5; Micah 6:10-11) and “the Psalms” Proverbs 16:11; Proverbs 20:10, Proverbs 20:23, not less than “the Law,” especially insist on them. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-19Verses 17-19 Let every persecutor and injurer of God's people take warning from the case of the Amalekites. The longer it is before judgement comes, the more dreadful will it be at last. Amalek may remind us of the foes of our souls. May we be enabled to slay all our lusts, all the corruptions both within and without, all the powers of darkness and of the world, which oppose our way to the blessed Saviour.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17The Amalekites were tribal groups who attacked Israel during the journey through the Sinai wilderness. They attacked the back of the camp, where the weak and tired people were traveling (Exodus 17:8–16). The Amalekites were likely related to the Edomites. Their ancestor was Amalek, a grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:12).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 17-1917-19. Remember what Amalek did--This cold-blooded and dastardly atrocity is not narrated in the previous history (Ex 17:14). It was an unprovoked outrage on the laws of nature and humanity, as well as a daring defiance of that God who had so signally shown His favor towards Israel (see on 1 Samuel 15; 27. 8; 30).Read the comment
