2 Samuel 19:43
43But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “12We have ten parts in the king, therefore 3we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat us with contempt? Was it not 4our advice first to bring back 5our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.
2 Samuel 19:43 in other versions
- King James Version (KJV)And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? - New International Version (NIV)Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king; so we have a greater claim on David than you have. - English Standard Version (ESV)And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, "We have ten shares in the king, and in David also we have more than you. Why then did you despise us? - New King James Version (NKJV)And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten shares in the king; therefore we also have more right to David than you. Context of 2 Samuel 19:43
41And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why had our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him over the Jordan?” 42Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s expense, or has anything been taken for us?” But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “We have ten parts in the king, therefore we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat us with contempt? Was it not our advice first to bring back our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 19:43
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 43We have ten parts in the king, and - more right - We are ten tribes to one, or we are ten times so many as you; and consequently should have been consulted in this business. The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel - They had more weight, for they had more reason on their side. It is pleasant when every province, canton, district, and county, vie with each other in personal attachment to the prince, and loyal…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 40-43Verses 40-43 The men of Israel though themselves despised, and the fiercer words of the men of Judah produced very bad effects. Much evil might be avoided, if men would watch against pride, and remember that a soft answer turneth away wrath. Though we have right and reason on our side, if we speak it with fierceness, God is displeased.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 41-43This disagreement started because David favored his own tribe, Judah. It shows the early signs of the split that eventually divided Judah and Israel into two nations (1 Kings 11:31; 12:16, 20). Were we not the first: See 2 Samuel 19:11–12.Read the comment
