2 Corinthians 11

Paul Defends His Apostleship

1I wish that you would 1bear with me in a little 2foolishness; but 3indeed you are bearing with me. 2For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I 4betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might 5present you as a pure virgin. 3But I am afraid that, as the 6serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. 4For if 7one comes and preaches 8another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a 9different spirit which you have not received, or a 10different gospel which you have not accepted, you 11bear this 12beautifully. 5For I consider myself 13not in the least inferior to the 14most eminent apostles. 6But even if I am 15unskilled in speech, yet I am not so in 16knowledge; in fact, in every way we have 17made this evident to you in all things.

7Or 18did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the 19gospel of God to you 20without charge? 8I robbed other churches by 21taking wages from them to serve you; 9and when I was present with you and was in need, I was 22not a burden to anyone; for when 23the brethren came from 24Macedonia they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from 25being a burden to you, 26and will continue to do so. 1027As the truth of Christ is in me, 28this boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of 29Achaia. 11Why? 30Because I do not love you? 31God knows I do!

12But what I am doing I will continue to do, 32so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be 33regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. 13For such men are 34false apostles, 35deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14No wonder, for even 36Satan disguises himself as an 37angel of light. 15Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, 38whose end will be according to their deeds.

1639Again I say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. 17What I am saying, I am not saying 4041as the Lord would, but as 42in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. 18Since 43many boast 44according to the flesh, I will boast also. 19For you, 45being so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly. 20For you tolerate it if anyone 46enslaves you, anyone 47devours you, anyone 48takes advantage of you, anyone 49exalts himself, anyone 50hits you in the face. 21To my 51shame I must say that we have been 52weak by comparison.

But in whatever respect anyone else 53is bold--I 54speak in foolishness--I am just as bold myself. 22Are they 55Hebrews? 56So am I. Are they 57Israelites? 58So am I. Are they 5960descendants of Abraham? 61So am I. 23Are they 62servants of Christ?--I speak as if insane--I more so; in 6364far more labors, in 6566far more imprisonments, 6768beaten times without number, often in 69danger of death. 24Five times I received from the Jews 70thirty-nine lashes. 25Three times I was 71beaten with rods, once I was 72stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my 73countrymen, dangers from the 74Gentiles, dangers in the 75city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among 76false brethren; 27I have been in 77labor and hardship, 78through many sleepless nights, in 79hunger and thirst, often 80without food, in cold and 8182exposure. 28Apart from such 83external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for 84all the churches. 29Who is 85weak without my being weak? Who is 86led into sin 87without my intense concern?

30If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my 88weakness. 31The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, 89He who is blessed forever, 90knows that I am not lying. 32In 91Damascus the ethnarch under Aretas the king was 92guarding the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me, 33and I was let down in a basket 93through a window 94in the wall, and so escaped his hands.
