1 Peter 2
As Newborn Babes
1Therefore, 1putting aside all 2malice and all deceit and 3hypocrisy and 4envy and all 56slander, 27like newborn babies, long for the 89pure 10milk of the word, so that by it you may 11grow 12in respect to salvation, 3if you have 13tasted 1415the kindness of the Lord.
As Living Stones
4And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been 16rejected by men, but is 17choice and precious in the sight of God, 518you also, as living stones, 19are being built up as a 20spiritual house for a holy 21priesthood, to 22offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For this is contained in 23Scripture: “24Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a 25precious corner stone, And he who believes in 26Him will not be 27disappointed.” 728This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “29The stone which the builders 30rejected, This became the very corner stone,” 8and, “31A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; 32for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, 33and to this doom they were also appointed.
9But you are 34a chosen race, a royal 35priesthood, a 36holy nation, 37a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you 38out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1039for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
1140Beloved, 41I urge you as 42aliens and strangers to abstain from 43fleshly lusts which wage 44war against the soul. 1245Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they 46slander you as evildoers, they may 47because of your good deeds, as they observe them, 48glorify God 49in the day of 50visitation.
Honor Authority
1351Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14or to governors as sent 52by him 53for the punishment of evildoers and the 54praise of those who do right. 15For 5556such is the will of God that by doing right you may 57silence the ignorance of foolish men. 16Act as 58free men, and 59do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as 60bondslaves of God. 1761Honor all people, 62love the brotherhood, 63fear God, 64honor the 65king.
1866Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and 67gentle, but also to those who are 68unreasonable. 19For this finds 69favor, if for the sake of 70conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if 71when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds 72favor with God.
Christ Is Our Example
21For 73you have been called for this purpose, 74since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you 75an example for you to follow in His steps, 22who 76committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 2377and while being 78reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24and He Himself 7980bore our sins in His body on the 8182cross, so that we 83might die to 84sin and live to righteousness; for 85by His 86wounds you were 87healed. 25For you were 88continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the 89Shepherd and 90Guardian of your souls.
