Context of 1 Chronicles 10:4
2The Philistines closely pursued Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3The battle became heavy against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was wounded by the archers. Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died. 6Thus Saul died with his three sons, and all those of his house died together.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14The story of Israel as a kingdom starts with Saul's death. Saul did not achieve God's plans for him as king or for Israel as a nation. His death made way for David, whom the Chronicler saw as Israel's first true king.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid--He was, of course, placed in the same perilous condition as Saul.
