Context of 1 Chronicles 10:4

2And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3And the battle prevailed against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded by the archers. Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was greatly afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died. 6So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 10:4

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14The story of Israel as a kingdom starts with Saul's death. Saul did not achieve God's plans for him as king or for Israel as a nation. His death made way for David, whom the Chronicler saw as Israel's first true king.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid--He was, of course, placed in the same perilous condition as Saul.
