Context of Revelation 11:2
1Then I was given a stick like a measuring stick. I was told, “Stand up and measure the temple of God and the altar. Count those who worship there. But do not measure the temple courtyard. Leave that out, because it is given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 42 months. 3I will allow my two witnesses who wear sackcloth to speak what God has revealed. They will speak for 1,260 days.” 4These witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands standing in the presence of the Lord of the earth.

Commentaries on Revelation 11:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2But the court - is given unto the Gentiles - The measuring of the temple probably refers to its approaching destruction, and the termination of the whole Levitical service; and this we find was to be done by the Gentiles, (Romans), who were to tread it down forty-two months; i.e., just three years and a half, or twelve hundred and sixty days. This must be a symbolical period.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2But the court which is without the temple - Which is outside of the temple proper, and, therefore, which does not strictly pertain to it. There is undoubtedly reference here to the “court of the Gentiles,” as it was called among the Jews - the outer court of the temple to which the Gentiles had access, and within which they were not permitted to go. For a description of this, see the notes on Matthew 21:12. To an observer this would seem to be a part of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3The outer courtyard of the Jerusalem Temple, which was outside the stone warning fence, was considered the place for the Gentile nations. John uses this image to make a clear distinction between the people God recognizes and those he does not. The 42 months and 1,260 days represent three and a half years, or an incomplete seven (see study notes on Daniel 7:24–25; 8:26; 9:24–27). John frequently uses these time periods in Revelation when persecution is…Read the comment

It is not to be measured; whereas the Holy Place is. given--by God's appointment. unto the Gentiles--In the wider sense, there are meant here "the times of the Gentiles," wherein Jerusalem is "trodden down of the Gentiles," as the parallel, Lu 21:24, proves; for the same word is used…Read the comment
