Context of Luke 5:4
2Jesus saw two boats on the shore. The fishermen had stepped out of them and were washing their nets. 3So Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon and asked him to push off a little from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and taught the crowd from the boat. When he finished speaking, he told Simon, “Take the boat into deep water, and lower your nets to catch some fish.” 5Simon answered, “Teacher, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll lower the nets.” 6After the men had done this, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4let down your nets for a catch: Peter was naturally unsure when a teacher told fishermen how to catch fish. It seemed strange for three reasons: When the sun rose, the fish went down to the bottom of the lake. This is why they usually fished at night. They used a heavy net that hung from the side of the boat, held by two men (or stretched between two boats), so they could not fish in deep water. They had just fished all night and caught nothing, so it now…Read the comment
