Context of Luke 5:6
4When he finished speaking, he told Simon, “Take the boat into deep water, and lower your nets to catch some fish.” 5Simon answered, “Teacher, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll lower the nets.” After the men had done this, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear. 7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. Their partners came and filled both boats until the boats nearly sank. 8When Simon Peter saw this, he knelt in front of Jesus and said, “Leave me, Lord! I’m a sinful person!”

Commentaries on Luke 5:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Their net brake - Or, began to break, ̔, or, was likely to be broken. Had it broke, as our version states, they could have caught no fish. Grammarians give the following rule concerning words of this kind. Verba completiva inchoative intelligenda. Verbs which signify the accomplishment of a thing, are often to be understood as only signifying the beginning of that accomplishment. Raphelius gives some very pertinent examples of this out of Herodotus.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Their net brake - Or their net “began” to break, or was “about” to break. This is all that is implied in the Greek word. If their nets had actually “broken,” as our English word seems to suppose, the fish would have escaped; but no more is meant than that there was such a multitude of fishes that their net was “on the point” of being torn asunder.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-11This is the first time Luke records Jesus calling the disciples to follow him. Matthew and Mark describe an earlier calling of the four brothers who were fishermen (Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20). Jesus showed great authority in the miraculous catch of fish and in his call of Simon Peter.Read the comment
