Context of Luke 5:4
2He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” 5Simon answered, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word I will lower the nets.” 6When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets started to tear.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4let down your nets for a catch: Peter was naturally unsure when a teacher told fishermen how to catch fish. It seemed strange for three reasons: When the sun rose, the fish went down to the bottom of the lake. This is why they usually fished at night. They used a heavy net that hung from the side of the boat, held by two men (or stretched between two boats), so they could not fish in deep water. They had just fished all night and caught nothing, so it now…Read the comment
