Context of Galatians 4:20
18(Devotion to a good cause is always good, even when I’m not with you.) 19My children, I am suffering birth pains for you again until Christ is formed in you. I wish I were with you right now so that I could change the tone of my voice. I’m completely puzzled by what you’ve done! 21Those who want to be controlled by Moses’ laws should tell me something. Are you really listening to what Moses’ Teachings say? 22Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by a woman who was a slave and the other by a free woman.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20I desire to be present with you - I wish to accommodate my doctrine to your state; I know not whether you need stronger reprehension, or to be dealt with more leniently. I stand in doubt of you - I have doubts concerning your state; the progress of error and conviction among you, which I cannot fully know without being among you, This appears to be the apostle's meaning, and tends much to soften and render palatable the severity of his reproofs.Read the comment
