Context of Galatians 4:20
18Now it is always pleasant to be eagerly sought after [provided that it is] for a good purpose, and not just when I am with you [seeking you myself—but beware of the others doing it]. 19My little children, for whom I am again in [the pains of] labor until Christ is [completely and permanently] formed within you— how I wish that I were with you now and could change my tone, because I am perplexed in regard to you. 21Tell me, you who are bent on being under the Law, do you not listen to [what] the Law [really says]? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman [Hagar] and one by the free woman [Sarah].

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20I desire to be present with you - I wish to accommodate my doctrine to your state; I know not whether you need stronger reprehension, or to be dealt with more leniently. I stand in doubt of you - I have doubts concerning your state; the progress of error and conviction among you, which I cannot fully know without being among you, This appears to be the apostle's meaning, and tends much to soften and render palatable the severity of his reproofs.Read the comment
