Context of Romans 6:12
10When Christ died, he died once to destroy the power of sin for ever. Now that he is alive again, he lives to serve God. 11So you also should think about yourselves in the same way. Sin has no power over you, as if you were dead. In your new life, you live to serve God, because you belong to Christ Jesus. So do not let sin rule your life in this world. Do not do the wrong things that your body wants to do. 13Sin can use your body to do things that are wrong. So do not let any parts of your body serve sin as their master. Instead, be ready to serve God as your Master. You can do that because you now have a new life. Your old life is dead. So give every part of your body to God. Then he will use you to do right things. 14Sin will no longer have authority over you. You do not have a new life because you obey the Law which God gave to Moses. You have a new life because God is very kind to you.

Commentaries on Romans 6:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Let not sin therefore reign - This is a prosopopoeia, or personification. Sin is represented as a king, ruler, or tyrant, who has the desires of the mind and the members of the body under his control so that by influencing the passions he governs the body. Do not let sin reign, do not let him work; that is, let him have no place, no being in your souls; because, wherever he is he governs, less or more: and indeed sin is not sin without this. How is sin…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Let not sin therefore - This is a conclusion drawn from the previous train of reasoning. The result of all these considerations is, that sin should not be suffered to reign in us. Reign - Have dominion; obtain the ascendency, or rule. In your mortal body - In you. The apostle uses the word “mortal” here, perhaps, for these reasons, (1)To remind them of the tendency of the flesh to sin and corruption, as equivalent to “fleshly,” since the flesh is often…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-15Verses 11-15 The strongest motives against sin, and to enforce holiness, are here stated. Being made free from the reign of sin, alive unto God, and having the prospect of eternal life, it becomes believers to be greatly concerned to advance thereto. But, as unholy lusts are not quite rooted out in this life, it must be the care of the Christian to resist their motions, earnestly striving, that, through Divine grace, they may not prevail in this mortal…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. Let not sin therefore--as a Master reign--(The reader will observe that wherever in this section the words "Sin," "Obedience," "Righteousness," "Uncleanness," "Iniquity," are figuratively used, to represent a Master, they are here printed in capitals, to make this manifest to the eye, and so save explanation). in your mortal body, that ye should obey it--sin. in the lusts thereof--"the lusts of the body," as the Greek makes evident.
