Context of Romans 14:11
9Christ died and then he became alive again. That happened so that he could be the Lord of all people, those who have died and those who are still alive. 10So then, if you eat only vegetables, you must not judge other believers. Also, if you eat anything, you must not think that you are better than other believers. Remember that all of us will have to stand in front of God. He will decide whether we have done what is right or wrong. This is written in the Bible: ‘The Lord God says, “As surely as I live, this will certainly happen: Everyone will go down on their knees in front of me. Everyone will praise me that I am God.” ’ 12So each of us will have to explain to God about the things that we have done. 13So we must no longer judge other believers. Instead, you must decide never to bring trouble to another believer. Do not cause them to do something wrong.

Commentaries on Romans 14:11
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11For it is written - This passage is recorded in Isaiah 45:23. It is not quoted literally, but the sense is preserved. In Isaiah there can be no doubt that it refers to Yahweh. The speaker expressly calls himself Yahweh, the name which is appropriate to God alone, and which is never applied to a creature; Romans 14:18. In the place before us, the words are applied by Paul expressly to Christ; compare Romans 14:10. This mode of quotation is a strong…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-13Verses 7-13 Though some are weak, and others are strong, yet all must agree not to live to themselves. No one who has given up his name to Christ, is allowedly a self-seeker; that is against true Christianity. The business of our lives is not to please ourselves, but to please God. That is true Christianity, which makes Christ all in all. Though Christians are of different strength, capacities, and practices in lesser things, yet they are all the Lord's…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11This quotation is from Isaiah 49:18; 45:23. In its original context, Isaiah 45:23 appears among strong statements about God’s sovereignty (Isaiah 45:22, 24). Sovereign means having the highest authority and complete power. When God is described as sovereign, it means that God rules over all things. Because God alone is sovereign, only he has the right to judge. For this reason, believers should not judge one another (Romans 14:10, 12).Read the comment
