Context of Romans 15:9
7Christ has accepted you, so you must accept each other. In that way you will be praising God. 8Remember this: Christ became a servant of the Jews so that they could understand God's true message. He showed them that God has now done what he promised to their ancestors. The Gentiles also praise God because he has been kind to them. This is written in the Bible: ‘I will tell the Gentiles about you, God. I will praise you with songs, to show how great you are.’ 10It says also in the Bible: ‘Be very happy, you Gentiles! Praise God together with his people.’ 11It also says this: ‘Say how great the Lord is, all you Gentiles. All people, from every country, should say how great he is.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy - As the Jews were to glorify God for his truth, so the Gentiles were to glorify God for his mercy. The Jews received the blessings of the Gospel by right of promise, which promise God had most punctually and circumstantially fulfilled. The Gentiles had received the same Gospel as an effect of God's mere mercy, having no right in consequence of any promise or engagement made with any of their…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And that the Gentiles - The benefits of the gospel were not to be confined to “the Jews;” and as God “designed” that those benefits should be extended to the “Gentiles,” so the Jewish converts ought to be willing to admit them and treat them as brethren. That God “did” design this, the apostle proceeds to show. Might glorify God - Might “praise,” or give thanks to God. This implies that the favor shown to them was a “great” favor. For his mercy - Greek…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Christ fulfilled the prophecies and promises relating to the Jews, and the Gentile converts could have no excuse for despising them. The Gentiles, being brought into the church, are companions in patience and tribulation. They should praise God. Calling upon all the nations to praise the Lord, shows that they shall have knowledge of him. We shall never seek to Christ till we trust in him. And the whole plan of redemption is suited to reconcile…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9Through Christ, God enabled Jews and Gentiles to unite and glorify him as the new covenant people of God (see chapters 9–11). The issue of Jewish and Gentile relationships was central to the disagreement in the Roman church (14:1–15:7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-128-12. Now--"For" is the true reading: the apostle is merely assigning an additional motive to Christian forbearance. I say that Jesus Christ was--"hath become" a minister of the circumcision--a remarkable expression, meaning "the Father's Servant for the salvation of the circumcision (or, of Israel)." for the truth of God--to make good the veracity of God towards His ancient people. to confirm the--Messianic promises made unto the fathers--To cheer the…Read the comment
