Context of Romans 14:11
9Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead. 10So why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For the Scriptures say, “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.’” 12Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

Commentaries on Romans 14:11
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11For it is written - This passage is recorded in Isaiah 45:23. It is not quoted literally, but the sense is preserved. In Isaiah there can be no doubt that it refers to Yahweh. The speaker expressly calls himself Yahweh, the name which is appropriate to God alone, and which is never applied to a creature; Romans 14:18. In the place before us, the words are applied by Paul expressly to Christ; compare Romans 14:10. This mode of quotation is a strong…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-13Verses 7-13 Though some are weak, and others are strong, yet all must agree not to live to themselves. No one who has given up his name to Christ, is allowedly a self-seeker; that is against true Christianity. The business of our lives is not to please ourselves, but to please God. That is true Christianity, which makes Christ all in all. Though Christians are of different strength, capacities, and practices in lesser things, yet they are all the Lord's…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11This quotation is from Isaiah 49:18; 45:23. In its original context, Isaiah 45:23 appears among strong statements about God’s sovereignty (Isaiah 45:22, 24). Sovereign means having the highest authority and complete power. When God is described as sovereign, it means that God rules over all things. Because God alone is sovereign, only he has the right to judge. For this reason, believers should not judge one another (Romans 14:10, 12).Read the comment
