Context of Matthew 26:28
26While Jesus and his disciples were eating, he took a loaf of bread. He thanked God for it and then he broke the bread into pieces. He gave some of it to each of them. He said, ‘Take this bread and eat it. This is my body.’ 27Then Jesus took a cup. He thanked God for the wine in the cup. Then he gave it to them and he said, ‘All of you should drink some of this wine. This is my blood that shows God's promise. When I die, my blood will pour out of my body. In that way God will forgive many people for the wrong things that they have done. That is the promise that God makes because of my death. 29I tell you this. I will not drink wine again until I drink it with you in my Father's kingdom. Then it will be new wine.’ 30Then Jesus and his disciples sang a song to praise God. Then they went out to the Mount of Olives.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28For this is my blood of the New Testament - This is the reading both here and in St. Mark; but St. Luke and St. Paul say, This cup is the New Testament in my blood. This passage has been strangely mistaken: by New Testament, many understand nothing more than the book commonly known by this name, containing the four Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, apostolical Epistles, and book of the Revelation; and they think that the cup of the New Testament means no…Read the comment

Matthew 26:26 As they were eating - As they were eating the paschal supper, near the close of the meal. Luke adds that he said, just before instituting the sacramental supper, “With desire have I desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.” This is a Hebrew manner of expression, signifying “I have greatly desired.” He had desired it, doubtless: (1)that he might…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-30Verses 26-30 This ordinance of the Lord's supper is to us the passover supper, by which we commemorate a much greater deliverance than that of Israel out of Egypt. Take, eat; accept of Christ as he is offered to you; receive the atonement, approve of it, submit to his grace and his government. Meat looked upon, be the dish ever so well garnished, will not nourish; it must be fed upon: so must the doctrine of Christ. This is my body; that is, spiritually…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28Using the bread and the cup as symbols of his body and blood, Jesus established the communion meal that his disciples were to continue in remembrance of his death. This is My body, given for you: The unleavened bread of the Passover represented the death of Jesus as the Passover lamb. He would allow his blood to pour out "for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28; compare 1 Corinthians 11:24–25).Read the comment
