Context of Luke 3:22
20So then Herod did an even worse thing; he locked John up in prison. 21While John was still baptizing all the people, he also baptized Jesus. While Jesus was praying, the sky opened. The Holy Spirit came down onto Jesus. When he came down like that, he looked like a dove. Then a voice spoke from heaven, ‘You are my Son and I love you. You make me very happy.’ 23Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his work. People thought that he was the son of Joseph. Joseph was from the family of Heli. 24Heli was from the family of Matthat. Matthat was from the family of Levi. Levi was from the family of Melchi. Melchi was from the family of Jannai. Jannai was from the family of Joseph.

Commentaries on Luke 3:22
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-22Verses 21-22 Christ did not confess sin, as others did, for he had none to confess; but he prayed, as others did, and kept up communion with his Father. Observe, all the three voices from heaven, by which the Father bare witness to the Son, were pronounced while he was praying, or soon after, Lu 9:35; Joh 12:28. The Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and there came a voice from heaven, from God the Father, from the excellent…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22The Holy Spirit might have looked like a dove, or it might have come down as a dove would. Psalm 2:7 shows that Jesus is the Messiah (the Christ, the promised King) from David’s family line. Isaiah 42:1 shows the servant of the Lord (the one chosen to carry out God’s work). God again declared who Jesus is from heaven at his transfiguration (when his…Read the comment
