Context of Acts 10:12
10He became hungry and he wanted to eat some food. While someone was preparing a meal for him, Peter had a special dream. 11In a vision, he saw heaven open above him. Then he saw something like a large piece of cloth. Somebody held it at each of its four corners and let it come down to the ground. Inside the cloth there were many different kinds of animals with four legs. There were also wild birds and snakes. 13Then Peter heard a voice that said to him, ‘Peter, stand up and kill some of these animals. Then you can cook them and eat the meat.’ 14Peter answered, ‘No, Lord, I would certainly not do that. I have never eaten an animal that our Law says is unclean.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12All manner of four-footed beasts, etc. - Every species of quadrupeds, whether wild or domestic; all reptiles, and all fowls. Consequently, both the clean and unclean were present in this visionary representation: those that the Jewish law allowed to be sacrificed to God, or proper for food; as well as those which that law had prohibited in both cases: such as the beasts that do not chew the cud; fish which have no scales; fowls of prey and such others as…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Wherein - This particular vision was suggested by Peter‘s hunger, Acts 10:10. It was designed, however, to teach him an important lesson in regard to the introduction of all nations to the gospel. Its descending from heaven may have been an intimation that that religion which was about to abolish the distinction between the Jews and other nations was of divine origin. See Revelation 21:2.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-18Verses 9-18 The prejudices of Peter against the Gentiles, would have prevented his going to Cornelius, unless the Lord had prepared him for this service. To tell a Jew that God had directed those animals to be reckoned clean which were hitherto deemed unclean, was in effect saying, that the law of Moses was done away. Peter was soon made to know the meaning of it. God knows what services are before us, and how to prepare us; and we know the meaning of…Read the comment
