Context of 1 Corinthians 10:4
2It is like God baptized all of them in the cloud and in the sea. In that way, they became people who followed Moses. 3All our ancestors ate the same spiritual food. All of them drank the same spiritual drink. They drank water from the spiritual rock that went with them. Christ was that rock. 5They all received the same help from God, but most of them did not please God. God caused most of them to die in the wilderness. 6We must learn from those things that happened to our ancestors. We must not want to do very bad things, like they did.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Spiritual drink - By the spiritual meat, and , spiritual drink, the apostle certainly means both meat and drink, which were furnished to the Israelitish assembly miraculously, as well as typically: and he appears to borrow his expression from the Jews themselves, who expressly say רוחני הלז הלחם hallechem hallaz ruchani, that bread was spiritual, and היו רוחניים מיים meyim ruchainiyim haiu, the waters were spiritual. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink - The idea here is essentially the same as in the previous verse, that they had been highly favored of God, and enjoyed tokens of the divine care and guardianship. That was manifested in the miraculous supply of water in the desert, thus showing that they were under the divine protection, and were objects of the divine favor. There can be no doubt that by “spiritual drink” here, the apostle refers to the water…Read the comment

Not the literal rock (or its water) "followed" them, as Alford explains, as if Paul sanctioned the Jews' tradition (Rabbi Solomon on Nu 20:2) that the rock itself, or at least the stream from it, followed the Israelites from place to place…Read the comment
