Context of Mark 14:21
19They began to be distressed and to say to him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve — the one who is dipping bread in the bowl with me. For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.” 22As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Nothing could be less the result of human foresight than the events here related. But our Lord knows all things about us before they come to pass. If we admit him, he will dwell in our hearts. The Son of man goes, as it is written of him, as a lamb to the slaughter; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! God's permitting the sins of men, and bringing glory to himself out of them, does not oblige them to sin; nor will this be any excuse…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21will go just as it is written about Him: See, for example, Isaiah 52:13–53:12. Jesus knew ahead of time that this betrayal would happen as part of God’s plan (compare 8:31–33). But God condemned the one who betrayed him. Jesus and the gospel writers do not explain how God’s sovereignty (God’s rule and control over all things) and Judas’s human responsibility fit together. Yet both truths are clearly affirmed (see John 19:11).Read the comment
