Context of Mark 14:21
19They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?” 20He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips his hand with me into the bowl. For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.” 22While they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it. This is my body.” 23And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Nothing could be less the result of human foresight than the events here related. But our Lord knows all things about us before they come to pass. If we admit him, he will dwell in our hearts. The Son of man goes, as it is written of him, as a lamb to the slaughter; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed! God's permitting the sins of men, and bringing glory to himself out of them, does not oblige them to sin; nor will this be any excuse…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21will go just as it is written about Him: See, for example, Isaiah 52:13–53:12. Jesus knew ahead of time that this betrayal would happen as part of God’s plan (compare 8:31–33). But God condemned the one who betrayed him. Jesus and the gospel writers do not explain how God’s sovereignty (God’s rule and control over all things) and Judas’s human responsibility fit together. Yet both truths are clearly affirmed (see John 19:11).Read the comment
