Context of Matthew 13:48

46and upon finding a single pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet which was lowered into the sea, and gathered fish of every kind, and when it was full, they dragged it up on the beach; and they sat down and sorted out the good fish into baskets, but the worthless ones they threw away. 49So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50and throw the wicked into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping [over sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [over distress and anger].

Commentaries on Matthew 13:48

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-50Verses 47-50 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net … - This parable does not differ in meaning from that of the tares. The gospel is compared to a net dragging along on the bottom of a lake, and collecting all - good and bad. The gospel may be expected to do the same; but in the end of the world, when the net “is drawn in,” the bad will be separated from the good; the one will be cast away, and the other saved. Our Saviour never fails to keep before…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 44-52Verses 44-52 Here are four parables. 1. That of the treasure hid in the field. Many slight the gospel, because they look only upon the surface of the field. But all who search the Scriptures, so as in them to find Christ and eternal life, Joh 5:39, will discover such treasure in this field as makes it unspeakably valuable; they make it their own upon any terms. Though nothing can be given as a price for this salvation, yet much must be given up for the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 47-50This parable is about God's judgment on the last day (Matthew 25:31–46). Then he will forever separate the wicked from the righteous. This warning emphasizes the importance of the two earlier invitations to make a decision to trust Jesus.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4848. Which, when it was full, they drew to shore--for the separation will not be made till the number of the elect is accomplished. and sat down--expressing the deliberateness with which the judicial separation will at length be made. and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away--literally, "the rotten," but here meaning, "the foul" or "worthless" fish: corresponding to the "tares" of the other parable.Read the comment
