Context of Matthew 13:48

46and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it. 47Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach; and they sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but the bad they cast away. 49So shall it be in the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the righteous, 50and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Commentaries on Matthew 13:48

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-50Verses 47-50 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net … - This parable does not differ in meaning from that of the tares. The gospel is compared to a net dragging along on the bottom of a lake, and collecting all - good and bad. The gospel may be expected to do the same; but in the end of the world, when the net “is drawn in,” the bad will be separated from the good; the one will be cast away, and the other saved. Our Saviour never fails to keep before…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 44-52Verses 44-52 Here are four parables. 1. That of the treasure hid in the field. Many slight the gospel, because they look only upon the surface of the field. But all who search the Scriptures, so as in them to find Christ and eternal life, Joh 5:39, will discover such treasure in this field as makes it unspeakably valuable; they make it their own upon any terms. Though nothing can be given as a price for this salvation, yet much must be given up for the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 47-50This parable is about God's judgment on the last day (Matthew 25:31–46). Then he will forever separate the wicked from the righteous. This warning emphasizes the importance of the two earlier invitations to make a decision to trust Jesus.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4848. Which, when it was full, they drew to shore--for the separation will not be made till the number of the elect is accomplished. and sat down--expressing the deliberateness with which the judicial separation will at length be made. and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away--literally, "the rotten," but here meaning, "the foul" or "worthless" fish: corresponding to the "tares" of the other parable.Read the comment
