Context of Luke 7:44
42When they had no means of repaying [the debts], he freely forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43Simon answered, “The one, I take it, for whom he forgave more.” Jesus said to him, “You have decided correctly.” Then turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house [but you failed to extend to Me the usual courtesies shown to a guest]; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair [demonstrating her love]. 45You gave Me no [welcoming] kiss, but from the moment I came in, she has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46You did not [even] anoint My head with [ordinary] oil, but she has anointed My feet with [costly and rare] perfume.

Commentaries on Luke 7:44
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 44Thou gavest me no water - In this respect Simon was sadly deficient in civil respect, whether this proceeded from forgetfulness or contempt. The custom of giving water to wash the guest's feet was very ancient. See instances in Genesis 18:4; Genesis 24:32; Judges 19:21; 1 Samuel 25:41. In Hindoostan it is the custom, that when a superior enters the house of an inferior, the latter washes his feet, and gives him water to rinse his mouth before he eats. See…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44Seest thou this woman? - You see what this woman has done to me, compared with what you have done. She has shown me expressions of regard which you, in your own house, have not shown. I entered into thine house - I came at your invitation, where I might expect all the usual rites of hospitality. Thou gavest me no water for my feet - Among Eastern people it was customary, before eating, to wash the feet; and to do this, or to bring water for it, was one of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-50Verses 36-50 None can truly perceive how precious Christ is, and the glory of the gospel, except the broken-hearted. But while they feel they cannot enough express self-abhorrence on account of sin, and admiration of his mercy, the self-sufficient will be disgusted, because the gospel encourages such repenting sinners. The Pharisee, instead of rejoicing in the tokens of the woman's repentance, confined his thoughts to her former bad character. But without…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-46Simon failed to show Jesus the usual acts of hospitality (ways to welcome a guest). The roads were dusty, so a servant would normally wash a guest’s feet. People in the Middle East often greet guests with a kiss on both cheeks, and this is still common today. Hosts also put olive oil on a guest’s head as a way to show honor and respect.Read the comment
